Garage Door Manual Lock Repair
The outside handle wobbles in your hand and the inside knob spins round and round with nothing attached.
In plain words
Many lock complaints turn out to be door complaints. The bar on a slide lock or a T-handle has to land in a small slot, and it only gets there if the door stops exactly where it stopped when the lock was fitted. A floor that has heaved, a track bracket that has loosened, a bottom seal that has flattened, or ice under the door all shift that landing point. The visit begins with the door: closed by hand, checked for level and for how it meets the floor and the tracks. With the door where it belongs, the lock often needs only a small adjustment to its guides.
How the visit goesYou have just moved in. The garage door carries a proper keyed handle on the outside, but no key came with the house, and the inside slide is painted over. You would like to be able to use it.

How the visit goes

Following the bars to the tracks
With the door shut, each bar is worked by hand while the technician watches its far end. It should travel smoothly through its guide, pass cleanly through the slot in the track, and come back the same way with no catching. A bar that binds points to rust in the guide or a guide that has been knocked out of line. A bar that reaches the track but not the slot points to alignment. A bar that is bent, kinked or hanging loose usually tells the story of an opener run against the lock. Both sides are checked even when only one is complained about, and the slots themselves are inspected for burrs, distortion and rust.
Replacing an inside slide lock
A slide bolt that is bent, seized or missing is replaced with a new lock of the same style, fixed to the door's edge stile so its bar lines up squarely with the slot in the track. Spring-loaded snap latches, which lock by themselves when the door closes, are set so they engage on closing and can be held open with their catch when the door is to be used with an opener. The fixing screws go into solid steel or wood, with through-bolts where the material is thin. The bolt is then thrown and released several times with the door down, and the technician confirms it clears the track fully so the door can rise without catching.
Other ways to secure the door you now know about
The alternatives to a manual lock are worth knowing. Most wall consoles have a lock-out button that stops every remote from working while you are away, which is the everyday answer for a powered door. Some openers accept an automatic deadbolt that slides a bar into the track each time the door closes and withdraws it before the door opens, so the security of a manual lock arrives without the need to remember it. A keyed outside handle can also be connected to the opener's release for the day the power is out and you are on the wrong side of the door. None of these is required; they are simply options.

What affects the quote
One door or two
A garage with two single doors, or a house with a second garage, doubles the hardware to check and often the parts to fit. Doing both in one visit is efficient and quoted as such.
Slide bolt or keyed handle
An inside slide bolt is a simple piece of hardware with one moving part. A keyed T-handle has a cylinder, spindle, centre body, springs and two bars, and its repair takes more time and more parts.
Door alignment behind the fault
When the bar misses its slot because the door sits high or crooked, the fix reaches into track brackets, opener limits or the door's closed position, and that adjustment is quoted alongside the lock work.
What to have ready
- Is it one door or two, and are there other garage doors on the property?
- Is the lock a sliding bar inside, a T-shaped handle outside with a key, or both?
- Does the handle turn, and does anything move inside the door when it does?
Garage Door Manual Lock Repair: questions
QuestionsWill new holes have to be cut in the track?
Rarely. The slots are already there on most tracks, and a bar that misses one is usually a sign the door or a guide has moved. Restoring the door's closed position and resetting the guide brings the bar back to the existing slot. A new slot is punched only when a lock is added to a door that never had one, or an old slot is badly damaged.
What information helps when I book the visit?
Whether the lock is an inside sliding bar, an outside T-shaped handle with a key, or both; whether the handle turns and whether anything moves when it does; whether the key goes in and turns; whether an opener is fitted and whether it has ever run with the lock engaged; the door's material and age; and whether you hold a key. A photo of the inside of the lock is useful.
Why does the inside knob spin without doing anything?
The knob is meant to grip the square spindle with a set screw, and that screw has loosened or the spindle's flat has worn so the knob no longer bites. Sometimes the spindle itself has sheared inside the door. The technician tightens a fresh set screw onto a proper flat or fits a new spindle of the correct length, and the knob and outside handle move as one again.
